Re: I'm thinking of getting a dog and never had one before
That's my thinking too, CS, based on reading that when you first posted up the link. The effect on the coat isn't incidental either as his is one of his best features (yes, I am turning into a fucking dog bore). People comment on it all the time and I'd hate to see to see it lose its lustre.

I reckon the fence will stop him going out looking for vag, unless of course a bitch actually comes within sniffing range. Fear not, once I've sorted what seems to be the most reliable option I'll be back to bore you all shitless with the details.

This is form the kennel club on castration. It takes away some cancer risks, but that's it really.... I feel the cons out weigh the pro's, certainly in later life

PROS of castrating male dogs
removes the risk of prostate problems
removes risk of testicular cancer
can reduce aggressiveness
can reduce hypersexual behaviour

CONS of castrating male dogs
may not reliably reduce aggression
may not reduce dominant behaviour
does affect growth rate
does affect maturation
increases the likelihood that your dog will get fat later in life (unless you control its diet strictly and exercise it regularly)
could affect the growth and texture of your dog's coat

Anyone else thinking Sold is enjoying this conversation a bit too much...?

3 years old in dog years is 21 years old in our life... imagine what you was like at 21... you'd travel 100 odd miles in a car for a bunk up never alone a couple of hills and valleys like your dog is... and I imagine seeing some dogs when they get the scent of doggy pussy you'd need a damn sight more than a electric fence to stop them

Re: I'm thinking of getting a dog and never had one before
Definitely calmed him down and he wasn't as mental being gay and doing dog dancing with his little mate Alfie afterwards.

He wasn't the best example, as he got cushings disease soon afterwards which fucks them up and then a year later a brain tumour which killed him, so wasn't easy seeing the whole knackers impact.

May chill out their libido, but they still absolutely love getting outside and sniffing all that glorious piss, so don't worry about him turning into a dog who just wants a noose.

I see your point Sold0, but reckon I'm going to try the fence option before I get my axe out. I'll let you know how I get on.

Mart.. my Lab was done at 10 months... off lead he was off... I'm talking in other fields off.... after he was done totally different dog... we may get the occasional hump on a choco lab?? but that's just dog domination... and if the lab looks cute...!! but as wandering goes he's like glue by my side...

Mart O 4:37 Fri Mar 10
Re: I'm thinking of getting a dog and never had one before
But seriously, Grumps, you didn't see any major change in behaviour afterwards ?

Grumpster 4:33 Fri Mar 10
Re: I'm thinking of getting a dog and never had one before
Had my old dog done when he was 5.

Not ideal, but I only got him when he was 4 which was why he wasn't done as a pup.

I mean I think he didn't love me any less, but maybe in dog bark speak he was actually constantly calling me a cunt afterwards instead of asking for a walk!!

Re: I'm thinking of getting a dog and never had one before
Mar... I know of 2 people that have lost their labs to testicular cancer... personally... unless I was thinking of breeding from him I would put him out of his misery of trying to stalk down a bitch on heat a good mile or so away... that's me personally... other people I know think that if you take their nuts you are ruining their character etc.. each to their own... but I reckon it is a good bet his wondering is to do with him looking for dog pussy.

Re: I'm thinking of getting a dog and never had one before
For the reason I posted at 4:20, Grumps (you were probably typing at the time).

Thing is, Council Scum posted a very interesting link on castration (for dogs, obviously) a while ago and it's not as clear cut (ahem) as it might seem..

Grumpster 4:22 Fri Mar 10
Re: I'm thinking of getting a dog and never had one before
Is there a reason why you're not getting his gonads snipped off Mart?

If you won't be breeding him, then a way of thinking of it being kind to him, is that dogs are extremely prone to getting cancer in that area and castration may ultimately add a couple of years to his life.

Re: I'm thinking of getting a dog and never had one before
Sold0 - If he were a pup, I wouldn't hesitate. However, I'm concerned by how it might after an already (slightly) fragile temperament.

I'd hate to slice off his nads only for him to keep wandering off...

Re: I'm thinking of getting a dog and never had one before
Anyone see Crufts last night... bit they done on the Frenchies... Eastern European gangs stealing or saturating the market with cross breeds (mixed with Boston's) and charging up to £4k a pop.... and people actually paying it... you could not fucking make it up....

Northern Sold 4:17 Fri Mar 10
Re: I'm thinking of getting a dog and never had one before
Mart... I think it's quite simple... he's 3 years old.. he's in his prime.. he's intact... he wants Dog pussy... and now he's looking for it... mine used to do that before we whacked them off... your choice... electrocute or castrate your hound...

Mart O 4:16 Fri Mar 10
Re: I'm thinking of getting a dog and never had one before
CS - so he could be trained not to cross it ? Probably a stupid question but I'm learning about all this as I go along. If so, with all the farmers out here, there must be people who could do that for me.

Biggie Biggs 4:09 Fri Mar 10

I should have said 'electronic fence' rather than 'electric'. The products I'm looking at are more like a wire that you lay on/under the ground. The dog has a collar which beeps when he gets too close, then sends a small shock if he tries to cross it.

There are lots of different products on the market and I've read good and bad about most, but wondered whether anyone on here had experience of them.

Re: I'm thinking of getting a dog and never had one before
Went for a walk at lunchtime and there was a woman walking 5 dogs across the non-wobbly bridge from the Tate Modern.

2 French bulldogs, a cockapoo, a spaniel and a bulldog called Oscar.

I know he was called Oscar, as when she was off guard, he started having a shit right in the middle of the bridge much to her dismay :o)
